Tasha- Glad to hear Claire is sleeping so good, makes things so much easier. I have picked up a few clothes for the boys for Christmas. Will probably get a few sleepers, one or 2 toys, and sleds, we'll soon need high chairs too. Will TRY to keep in reasonable this year! We are going to try to have a lean Christmas in general with both of us on EI there's not alot of extra money coming in once we pay our expenses. The boys are drinking around $200 in formula alone and that's with me pumping.

Softi- I asked my pharmacist if I needed to taper off of Dom, he said that you don't need to, but he would rec that I reduce to 2 tabs 4 times a day, for around 4 days and then reduce to 1 tab once a day before discontining. How are you planning to wean? Reducing your pumping time and freq? I am planning on 10 mins 5 times a day for a week, and then 5 mins 4 times a day maybe?

Emily, I don't want to wean quite yet. I am just trying to bring my Domperidone down. I want to pump for another month and a half... What the doc told me was to decrease one pill a day every 5 days and see what happens to my supply. If it decreases, I go back up. If it stays the same, I decrease again. He feels I will most likely end-up with the same amount of milk with about half the medication...

Hello,

Agh...I'm losing my milk...and now that it's happening I am realizing that I really don't want to stop nursing. Went to a breastfeeding clinic today and will be starting Fenugreek for production and Lecithin for my blocked ducts. (I still have so much pain!) I think some of you were on Fenugreek...anything I should know?

Lauren- I was on Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle recently until I suddenly decided I wanted to move towards weaning. I thought most people took both? Anyway I did find it increased my supply, and if not you could always try dom. Good luck!

Hi Emily,

Yes, I was just reading too that they should be taken together. I know the health nurse mentioned it but said she didn't think it necessary. I think I'll pick up the milk thistle. I think what I really want is enough milk to pump and bottle feed, the nursing is becoming quite frustrating and I'm now starting to get pain on my left side as well. I think the best solution may be pumping; god, I'm so flaky with all of this. Plus, it drives me crazy not to know how much he's taken... when he's fussy, I hate wondering if perhaps he's still hungry. Are you nursing at all Emily? When do you have time to pump? I find it difficult with the 2 kids. How often are you pumping?

I have a blocked duct on my Left side too, making it hard to even pick up a baby, feels better than yesterday though. Before I started to reduce my pumping I was pumping 6-7 times a day(atleast once between 12-5 am) for around 15 mins a session. I make the time, with Dh home too, he will watch the boys so I can pump in peace, I can imagine that it's trickier with a baby and a young son though. I have never tried nursing, just doesn't interest me and like you I like to know how much they're getting. I also like that I don't always have to be the one to feed the baby, although I know that in alot of ways nursing would be so much easier. Hope your duct clears up and your supply improves!

Now I am trying to pump 5 times a day for 10 mins only, feeling pretty "filled up" between sessions but pumping 25% less milk so things must be starting to slow down?

I tried Fenugreek temporarily... one of the side effects can be irregular or mid-cycle bleeding. I think I was a lucky one because I had this symptom and it was quite unpleasant so I stopped taking it; but I don't think it's a common side effect. The Blessed Thistle is to help increase appetite - since you're supposed to eat more when you're breast feeding. I was told that the blessed thistle wasn't necessary either.

Hello!

So now that I've been spending all this time pumping, it appears that Lane now far prefers formula to breast milk. I don't know if it's because of the herbs I'm on or what, but a couple of times now he'd only drink an ounce or so of his bottle then fuss. He continued to be fussy so I offered him a bottle of formula and he sucked her back. This has happened 3 times in the last 2 days!

Any idea how much breast milk is needed for the babies to get the health benefits. I'm wondering if I give him the equivalent of let's say 8 oz of breast milk a day...(snuck into a bottle of formula), if it's worth it?

I've put Lane to bed tonight unswaddled for the first time. He flailed around a bit, but went to sleep on his own, we'll see how long he stays that way. Normally, when swaddled, I have to hold and jiggle him until he sleeps...and he wont' let me sit in the rocker...even if I'm making the exact same movements!

Other than that...my girlfriend who lost 5 babies in one year (triplets at 19 wks then twins at 24, she lost the twins then got pregnant a couple of months later with triplests...all IUI) went into the hospital last night as she was dialating and her stitch is pulling away causing her to bleed. She's 33 weeks on Thursday so we're thrilled she got this far. This did a weight estimate today and the baby is estimated to be 5 pounds 1 oz...so that's great great news! Her cervix is just over 1cm and I keep telling her about Emily and Softi to encourage her. I'm sure everything will be just fine. She got the lung injection last night so we're hoping the baby holds off at least another 48 hours. She's only 1 cm dialated so really she could be in there for a couple of weeks still. (here's hoping)

I hope you're all doing well!

Lauren, no idea how much breastmilk is needed to give the benefits but I assume the more the better especially when they are very young. I know for premature babies that is what they recommend. However, at the age they are now, I am not sure. I know a lot of places recommend BF until at least 6 months. This is what I am planning to do. As for breastmilk, formula taste... fenugreek is supposed to give a maple syrup taste. If you are planning on giving formula as well, I would not even worry about taking it personnally. For me, it didn't change anything. I read it's really good when taken early on when having milk issues (i.e a week or so after birth) and that later on domperidone is more efficient. I personnally mix formula and breastmilk during the day (5 onces of BM and 2 onces of formula) and my son sees no issues there. At night, I give formula exclusively. I sometimes will give more breastmilk when I have more and he drinks it well too so not sure. He will get fussy sometimes but I can't really pinpoint what it's related to...

As for your friend, she could gain a lot of time. Even if not, at 33 weeks, the outcomes are excellent! Let us know what happens...

Thanks Softi,

I've been pumping on both sides 3 times a day. I see my milk is increasing. I'd like to freeze a bag or 2 a day so that I can have breast milk to offer until 6 months or longer...even if it is only 5 or 8 oz a day. Lane doesn't seem like he's missing nursing. I did try today once and he wasn't very into it...so the guilt is going away and I must admit...we both seem more content.

Lauren- Glad you've found something it is working for you and Lane. It'd be great if yo could freeze some bm, even if you just mixed it with cereal later, wish I had, had extra to freeze. Hope your friend does well, over 5 lbs is a great weight at 33 weeks! Fwiw I was 1 cm dialated March 19 and delivered May 18, so she could maybe even go full term?

AFM- weaning is going better than expected, I've discontinued my dom. Pumped 2 times yesterday, and will probably end up pumping 3 times today, yahoo! Just pumping when I get umcomfortable.
