We just went through an IVF cycle where we retrieved 14 eggs, 13 were mature and ICSId and 12 fertilized normally. All 12 looked awesome at day 3, but by day 4, all but one had arrested. The morula that was present on day 4 arrested by day 5. We ended up with nothing to transfer as they had planned on a day 5 transfer based on the wonderful fertilization.

Our first cycle a few years ago was similar. 10 retrieved, 9 mature, 8 fertilized normally. 8 beautiful embryos on day 3, none by day 5. The difference being that we did a day 3 transfer with that cycle and ended up pregnant.

Any idea what on earth could cause our embryos to do this? 12 to 1 in 24 hours then 1 to 0 in another 24 hours?

Julie,

Sorry to hear what happened. THe same thing happened to me at OFC last year. They told me it's extremely rare and happens maybe once a year. You are the second person at OFC this has happened to... I'm wondering if it's a clinic thing? I changed clinics after this happened, because I lost total confidence in the clinic and I still believe to this day they made a mistake in the lab and wouldn't admit it. They told me nothing in my follow-up appt. I ended up getting pregnant on my 3rd IVF and had a day 3 and day 5 transfer. Only one made it to day 5 and who knows which one took (total of 3 embryos' transferred). I hope you find anwers!

Thanks Sandi! I'd say it was an OFC thing, but the same thing happened to our embryos at McGill. We just did a 3 day transfer there, so we actually conceived. Had we left all 8 embryos go to day 5, I'm pretty sure they would have all arrested as well.

I think that totally strange, especially twice with your embrios, given that they must be good since you got pg with 3 day transfer previously.
Doing blast culture in lab for 5 day transfer is a much more delicate process than 3 day transfer and require better lab and very experienced embryologist, because it is easy to screw up. My clinic prefer to 3 day transfer for this reason. They do 5 day transfer, but not often and ceirtanly not on everybody. I think regardless if it was a lab error or not, they should not push you a 5 day transfer when they had this problem with your previous cycle.
I hope they give you some answer, and you get pg soon

No one really knows what causes embryos to stop growing in the lab. What is certain is that the best location for an embryo is in the uterus. As you have a past history of a day 3 pregnancy it would be sensible to do this again in future treatment cycles.

Good luck!

I am scared of this happening to us as we just had our day 3 transfer today despite I only wanted a day 5.
It was a donor cycle and we only got 8 and out of that 5 fertilized and this morning they call and tell me to come in today and do the transfer... Now we had one 8, one 7, one 5 , one 4 and another 2 !
In other words I guess 2 no good , 2 average and 1 good one and they only transferred 1 !!!
Did you get pregnant with 1 embryo on day 3 ?

Look at all the OFC'ers chiming in here (very interesting)

While mine didn't arrest, by day 5 my embryos did not do so hot. 1 average blast, 2 morulas, 4 others arrested or poor quality. I put back in the top 3, but I regret not doing a 3 day
