Hi North,

Thanks for all this useful info.  Did your clinic advise the 2 week rest for 2WW?  My clinic previously had advised just 1, but I like the idea of 2 better!  Do you mind me asking how much time you requested off in total?

Also, looking at your signature - do you think you will be eligible for the same type of leave with your upcoming IVF?

I've been told that our insurance company has a 90 day leave for each issue. For example with fertility treatment, once the leave starts the clock starts ticking and no matter how much time is taken off during that time, after 90 days that leave is done.  Then in future if a person had that same issue again, it wouldn't be eligible.

I was wondering about that for IVF & was thinking if possible if there may be multiple attempts, to plan them back to back so that let's say 2 (or 3?) attempts could be done in a 90 day period.  I mean, hopefully the first is successful and other attempts aren't needed, but just trying to plan either way.

Good for you for pursuing a 2nd opinion and getting immune testing.  I plan to do that as well, though it's so daunting... Are you seeing Dr. Sher?  (Sorry I have not gone back and read all the previous posts.)  My friend saw him in Vegas, I think it's at SIRM?  and she just had her baby with OE!  After previous failed attempts.  Though she is not in the 40+ age group so she had youth on her side. She also did intralipids.

Me: 40+, Him: 40, TTC: 4 yrs.
Dx: Egg quality due to my age, Tubal factor, suspected Endometriosis.

2010: Chlomid/IUI - BFN
2011: IVF x 2 - BFN

2012-13: Lots of alternative therapies and mind-body work: Celiac diagnosis & healing, Lowered my TSH (thyroid)

2014: Hydrosalpinx diagnosis

Next: Laparoscopy & removal of tube, Hysteroscopy, Endometrial biopsy, E-tegrity test?, Immune testing?

Froze my eggs when I was 37 & plan to use them after the above is complete.

Hi Highest Hopes,

No problem. Happy to help and answer questions.

In total, I requested 4 weeks off - the 2 weeks I was out of town to my clinic for treatment and then the 2WW. My clinic said they typically give people 2 weeks but since I was out of town, they added another 2 weeks on. Since I did an embryo transfer, I wanted this extra 2 weeks off because there is unavoidable mental and emotional stress in my job. So, a big part of getting my leave approved was having the nurse write "avoid mental and emotional stress" in the section of the Great West Life form that referred to "limitations."

And my job description says that mental and emotional stress are unavoidable in my job....so it all lined up just fine.

In terms of my next IVF, I don't have any reason at this point to think I won't be covered again. My request will be different this time however since I'm doing embryo banking (just retrieval) so I'll just be off work for 1 week and 2 days. When it comes to transfer time, I'll request more time off so I can avoid mental/emotional stress in the 2WW.

Hmmm...that's interesting about the 90 day thing. I dunno what to think about that. My short term disability just has a limit of 30 days (I believe) and then I'd have to apply for long term disability and I haven't heard anything about there being a limit in terms of particular medical issues. Would make sense to plan or think then as you are about back to back or having a month off in between attempts. Are you doing full IVF or just transfer? (I see that you have eggs that were retrieved when you were 37)

Thanks for the encouragement about getting a second opinion! We're so happy we did and yes, we're seeing Dr. Sher. It was a scary time after the first IVF and we felt really dropped by our first clinic. That's great to hear about your friend! We were in Vegas last month and met Sher and the team and really liked the individualized attention. And am so glad to have done the immune testing. When I spoke with the nurse at the clinic, she said that 75% of the women who come to their clinic test positive for NKC's. Given that they get a lot of folks who have had previous failures, it seems to suggest that immune issues may make for more complicated treatment issues for some people....but they can often get ignored. In the end, I was tested for 3 immune issues and the cost was about $600ish....well worth it I think.

How did your friend find the clinic and the process, if I can ask? And was it her first time with intralipids?

Olive consult January 2014

Have been taking CoQ10 600mg/day since January in preparation; acupuncture weekly

May 2014 IVF #1 (Olive Fertility): Estrace priming, Saizen, 225 IU Menopur, 225 IU Puregon, trigger Suprefact. 14 follicles and estradiol just under 10,000. Just 6 eggs retrieved, told they didn't look good; 2 fertilized, 1 survived and we did day 2 transfer (plan to do PGS/CCS went out the window). BFN

No more IVF's with OE recommended or supported; recommended donor eggs.

Currently consulting with Dr. Sher Las Vegas, CCRM in Colorado for 2nd opinion.

Decided we need to try again with a different protocol to see if it makes a difference (i.e. way less medication since I was a high responder last time).

Still doing some acupuncture to prep, CoQ10 200mg/day, prenatals, Omega 3's, vit D, wheatgrass, royal jelly.

August 18 2014 IVF #2 (SIRM Las Vegas): BCP, long lupron protocol. Cancelled due to ovarian cyst that needs to be aspirated. Back on BCP.

Immune testing with SIRM revealed elevated NKC's ~ will need intralipids before and after future embryo transfers.

That's a great tip about the stress, thanks for sharing that!

Too bad your first clinic made you feel that way. Is Olive a new clinic in BC? You would think they would care more especially being new, to try and establish a good reputation.

My friend loved Sher/SIRM, though there were a couple of roadbumps I think. Like her first attempt there her eggs didn't produce and they had to cancel the cycle and he didn't know why. But maybe that's just the way it is, not his fault. He adjusted her protocol and it worked the next time. This was after previous IVF failure at a Canadian clinic. Yes it was her first time on intralipids.

That's great your immune tests were only $600... wow.   I'm thinking of dealing with preventmiscarriage.com because SIRM will only test people who are going to do treatment there and that's not my situation.

As for me, it's not full IVF because the eggs have already been retrieved.  It's not 'just' transfer either as they need to thaw the eggs and then fertilize. I am also interested in getting the embryos tested. Are you doing that?

I just recently changed my signature to talk about my frozen eggs. I kept it so secret for so many years that it was only recently I was able to even share that info with anyone. I used to be very scared of judgement, and the fact that I spent a lot of money doing it, and it's just very personal. But now that it's coming closer to the time of trying them, I am sharing with a few people including here. It has been helping me that it's getting more exposure in the news, not to feel like it was such an "out there" thing to do, while it was still "experimental".

Yup, Olive's fairly new in BC....a break off clinic from Genesis. Lots good about the clinic but I would have preferred they say we don't think we can do anything else for you but support you to continue on with another clinic. Or to say, we don't advise you to try again with your own eggs but if you're willing to assume the risk, we'll work with you. In any case, we're happy to have moved on - I just think there are some ethics involved in such clinical decisions and how a practitioner handles them and I wasn't happy with how Olive handled the situation.

That's great you have an option with preventmiscarriage.com. SIRM only drew my blood then shipped it off to be tested at ReproSource.

Yes, our plan is to do CGH testing on the embryos (provided we get some that get to that stage!).

Thanks for sharing about your friend's experience. I get the sense that Sher is willing to go back to the drawing board and re-jig protocols and individualize them for the needs of the person.

I think it's fantastic fantastic you froze your eggs. I only wish I'd done the same or had any idea it was a possibility! What a brave move when it wasn't as much a known option. I really wish you the best with it and look forward to hearing more about it all. :)

Hello ladies

Hope you're all doing well.  We did our beta last Wed and it was 231, repeated it on Friday 622 then again yesterday (Monday) 2410.  Things are looking good.  We have chosen to not do the 6 week U/S, last time we did our miscarriage happened the next day.  I realize there may not be any correlation but we don't want to take any chances with the vaginal U/S.  We are going to do weekly betas until we can have a regular U/S around week 8.  We are currently at 5 weeks 2 days.  My GS is feeling the usual pregnancy feelings, frequent need to pee, sore boobs and very tired.  I told her I'm sorry but sooooo happy at the same time!
