The last ivf cycle we did when I was 38 we had the plan from the start to transfer all available embryos because my dr was confident that 1) we wouldn't have many and 2) the quality of my eggs was that poor that the risk of multiples was extremely low. We transferred our only 2 and have our little girl. When we decided to cycle again we decided to do a high stim iui. We stimmed with the same dosage we would as if we were doing ivf (300iu gonalf) and I only produced 1 follicle. The chances are so low at our age.
Me (Kerri-Lyn) 41, DH (Steve) 37, TTC since April 2007Unexplained IF (possibly crappy eggs, AMH 10.4 = poor responder) - HSG, SHGx3, Lap, Cycle Monitoring, Recurrent loss bloods, EMB, Karyotyping, DNA Frag - all normal! 7 IUI's, 2 cancelled IVF's, 3 complete IVF's, 1 FET, 2 clinics, 1 early miscarriage, lots of debt, lots of heartache, lots of tears. We rolled the dice and got lucky on our last ditch "close the door" cycle and have a beautiful little girl. April 2014 - Had the crazy notion to try for another. Shocked with a BFP, miscarried @ 8W6D. See my "about me" page for more cycle details.

X
Me 40 (just turned) DH 42
DD 2 yrs (Love of my LIfe)
Oct 2011-IUI #1: 1 folli- canceled :-(
Nov 2011-IUI #2: 2 folli, HCG trigger, transfer, prog tablets = BFN

Dec 2011- break, weird cycle late period, BFP??

Jan 2012- went 4 b/w on Day 1, dx: high FSH 20.5 :-( heartbroken
AF came 2 weeks late... Started femmerra... Let's see what happens. was not asked for follow up, what?!...left and took a vacation.

* So far my DR. At OFC did not even ask for further consultation. She just told me over the phone that if this doesn't work, it's time to throw in the towel! Is it weird to ask for 2ond opinion in same clinic?
*Regrets: Why was I not encouraged to go straight to IVE in October 2011 when my AFC was 8-10!! (so what if 2 short of 12 min.! Had no idea that was a possibility) arrrrggg!

Feb. 2012- IUI #3: natural cycle, HCG triggar, insemination mistimed (thanks a lot) - BFN

*Switched Drs*
-After a lot of soul searching and encouragment from previous Dr.s assistant, took referral for second opinion. Best decision ever! new b/w with new Dr., baseline, FSH 5.5, E2-400s (*sigh*), AFC 6. Waiting for AMH test

Apr 2012- IVF #1-Getting ready for IVF with donor egg- April 2012- DE from sister who is 38 yrs, yikes! (it was all we were comfortable with, she is older but everything looks good-fingers crossed)
May 29- 2 embies ....2WW!
BFN- wasn't meant to be

Please have a look at my signature.  Over three consecutive cycles at age 43, I transferred 10 embryos (2 3-day embryos first cycle, 4 3-day embryos second cycle and 4 blasts in my third cycle).  I ended up pregnant with ONE which totally fits the stats at age 43.  My doctor had said as it was my third cycle of IVF, he would do 5 if I wanted, but on the day of transfer, the last surviving blast was such crap that they said it was pointless (it arrested on day 6) and we transferred 4.  My only problems in my thirties were rare ovulation and mild low count for my DH - which are both generally easy to fix.  At age 43, I did not have DOR.  I was just 43 and this is what happened.  Most of your eggs are chromosomally abnormal no matter how many you have left.

The reason your RE is suggesting 5 is because he thinks you are NOT going to have multiples.  Otherwise he would not suggest 5.  It would be extremely unethical.

One more thing - there is a huge difference between OE in your late thirties, early forties and being 43.  The biggest percentage drop in live births is between age 42 and 43.  Hence the recommendations are quite different for women in late thirties vs. forties.

Hello, I am new to the forum.  I am 42 years old.  I recently was pregnant through embryo donation.  My daughter was born five weeks ago yesterday.  We had a great experience through Reprofit in the Czech Republic.  The egg and sperm donations are completely anonymous in the Czech Republic.  All donors also go through an extensive screening process and are all under the age of 32.

Okay, this is a little weird. I got a lot of calls and texts and messages from family and friends today, wishing me a happy birthday and aside from just a couple, including DS, I really didn't get much out of any of them. Not sure exactly why but I just wasn't very receptive to any of it. Somehow though I'm sitting here smiling because of GG and my own mouse creation. Seems silly to be touched by two women I've never met IRL but there you have it, I am. Thank you ladies. Perhaps one day I'll have the pleasure of your company in real life.

Hi Rugbygirl,

We are in a somewhat similar situation. I also have a daughter who is 2 years 8 months. I had her at 36 and thought we would have had our second by now. We got pregnant with IUI and miscarried in December. We are now moving to IVF with PGS so that our eggs can be tested for chromosomal abnormalities, with the goal of reducing the chance of miscarriage and having a successful pregnancy.  My close friends and family are here but they haven't experienced IF so it's difficult for them to understand. I have very good friends, but they just tip toe around the subject not sure what advice or support to give.

If you want to chat or ask questions feel free as I am also now navigating the waters of IVF.

Ggirl

Hi Ladies,

I have been exploring options abroad either for one last try wiht OE or, possibly, DE.  DH is completely supportive and on board.  The problem is that I am thinking A LOT about this and just don't have many people to discuss my worries with.  I'm just trying reallly hard to consider whether having a child at 45 (that's how old I will be) is selfish on my part.  It's so hard to think of how I'll feel when I'm 50 or 60.  Will I be a boring mother, not able to do fun and silly things with my child because I'm just too old.  I am fit and have good energy now, but who knows what I'll feel like then?  Already, I feel like the IVF has taken a physical toll on me...I'm recovering and getting back into shape, but it's made me wonder what I'll feel like after being pregnant.  Will my body be able to handle it?

I also fear that I'll feel isolated after the baby is born.  Our friends, with just a vew few exceptions, are at a stage in their lives where their teens are nearly out the door and they can now go out and enjoy dinners at restaurants without needing a babysitter.  Will we still be able to be a part of their lives?  I read about one man whose friend had decided to have a baby with his wife at 45 and this man no longer hangs around with them...he said that he has no interest in babies and diapers - been there, done that.

Medical advances make this all possible...I just struggle with whether fighting mother nature is the right thing to do.  I did check those websites for women who had decided to choose a childless life for themselves.  I don't know if I'm there yet - just trying to think about the future and be sure we're making the right choice.

I just wonder if anyone else out there worries about the same things as we try like hell to have a baby?  I'm so confused.

Hi sweet70!
I can totally understand what you are going through. I'm 47 and my DE son is 2 years old. I had the same fears until he was born. To be honest, I do feel a bit lonely sometimes since my friends have adults children. But I try to go to parks, pools and places where I can hang with others mons. I am quite surprise to see older moms though! I had my 2 first sons in my early 20s. Honestly I'm having much more fun now since I enjoy more little things in life! I think I am a MUCH better mom than I was at 23! We are also planning on a fet this fall. I will be 48 when I give birth.
If you feel like being a mon, go for it! You will not regret it! But you will reget not having one!

Thanks for sharing, Elsa. I have many of the same concerns as Sweet70.

me - 45.5, husband - 43.5

1 natural pregnancy but m/c in June 2011

7 failed IUIs, 3 medicated and 4 non-medicated, all BFN

I was a poor responder to the meds, only produced 1 viable egg so I'm not a candidate for IVF

Suffering  deeply, watching all my friends get pregnant and raise kids.

No one in my immediate circle of friends and family who has gone through this so forums are amazingly helpful.

Dec 2013 - have chosen a donor with San Diego Fertility Center and have begun the process. If all goes well we'll get me preggo in April 2014. IF all goes well...

It DIDN'T go well - our donor failed her genetic testing. It took MORE exhausting searches 24/7 to find another we liked, and finally she's passed and good to go. IF all goes well we'll go down to SDFC mid-June 2014 for the egg transfer and get me pregnant..if all goes well...if... if... if... so many letdowns cannot allow me to be hopeful, just wait and see...

June 2014 Went to SDFC, everything went smoothly. Well, kind of...family stuff... but transfer went well

July 16 2014 did blood test...BFP th_abfp.gif Wow. First time, feeling a lot emotions and crying uncontrollably for last 48 hours.

Hoping it sticks. That's all for now.

Hi, everyone. I'm new here, my name is Clea, I'm 44. I'm also going to do my first IVF (with DE)  soon. I've chosen a Spanish clinic IEGRA TRES TORRES in Barcelona, because  they have a guarantee pregnancy program. I've already discussed everything with my manager Elena (uk@iegratrestorres.net, +44 (203) 411-45-85, https://www.facebook...00008188119648/ ). Her English is fluent, there was no problem for us to talk, she answered all my questions very politely, the program is very attractive for me, so I'm ready to start! So, I came here to meet some people who have already gone through the IVF and with someone who is just starting their way. Somebody's experience may help me, and for someone (I really hope so) my experience will be useful

Have you checked out www.PVED.org (Parents Via Egg Donation)? There is a lot of good info there, and a forum you can join where people talk about exactly your concerns: what's it like to become parents at this age, am I up for it, is it fair to the baby, etc. The forum is completely private--posts do not even come up on web searches--and to protect people's privacy you can't joint without first having a phone conversation with the moderator/founder, Marna Gatlin. She is vigilant about protecting people's privacy and keeping mere curiosity-seekers out, so people can really talk openly about stuff.

I highly recommend checking them out.

Thank you so much, ladies. I was nervous to post my worries because I thought some women might think I'm crazy or extremely cynical. I really appreciate being able to share my thoughts with a group of women who can relate and who may also share my same fears.

I'm got to check out that link for PVED.org. Thanks!!!
