Have any of your doctors advised you to not have sex during the 2ww after IVF?

Those darn progesterone suppositories are so yucky - I don't know if I want to!

Thanks,
MG

My friend ButterflyKiss provided this quote from Laura Bush's book and I think it captures how many of us feel:"The English language lacks the words to mourn an absence... for someone who was never there at all, we are wordless to capture that particular emptiness. For those who deeply want children and are denied them, those missing babies hover like silent, ephemeral shadows over their lives. Who can describe the feel of a tiny hand that is never held?"

My RE told us no sex during the two week wait. It can cause uterine contractions that can affect the embryo.

My clinic's booklet says no sex for 4 weeks. That seems like a long time. I haven't had the ER/ET yet so I haven't asked the doctor what the reasons are for choosing that length of time. I'm anxious to see what others say.

My doctor was very clear that no sex or masturbation until the first ultrasound. You must avoid orgasms as this is contractions of the uterus which is something you don't want!

I find it odd that every other clinic seems to recommend no sex but my clinic didn't say a word about anything to avoid.

Doesn't matter - we'll abstain to be on the safe side.

Thanks for all the replies!

I swear I saw three different sets of instructions on three different pieces of paper from my clinic. One said no sex for a few days after ER, one said none in the 2ww and one said none until u/s or bfn. I suspect it doesn't actually matter all that much but since they don't actually know what makes an embie stick they can't really say it's okay either. I do know that sex in early pregnancy can cause spotting, so if that happened, and later you lost it, it wouldn't be too good for the mental health even though it would probably be unrelated.

You guys all got me thinking that I must be mistaken, so I emailed the clinic to double check. She emailed back and said that it was nothing to worry about and to "enjoy" LOL.
She said :
"There is some schools of thought that suggest seminal fluid around the cervical canal is conducive to good endometrial response."

So I guess clinics have differing opinions and maybe it is sort of a case by case thing as well. That for me it is ok, but for other cases it may not be?

I think we will abstain anyway since many other clinics say to.

I saw one doctor describe the activities in the 2ww as following "the path of least regret" should a cycle not work. If someone is likely to beat themself up with hindsight then stay way from activities that may cause regret. If you're not concerned about and won't blame yourself if it doesn't work out then you're probably ok.

I love that! That is such a great way of putting it in perspective.

I liked it too, and it applies to just about anything we do.
