My DH saw some stripy toe socks on a free giveaway pile a couple of days ago and insisted that I take them. Do you think he's on to something?

Haha...Your DH is cutting edge...

Digging up an old thread here...

My favourite advice was from a woman who told me "You know, there's such a thing as trying too hard". Yep, thanks.

And since we got back from our vacation in Florida, I've been asked by pretty much everyone if I think we got pregnant while we were away. I've told some of them - that's not possible because before we left, I started taking a drug to shut down my ovaries to give them a rest before IVF. Others, I just shake my head. Love it when they follow up with - "you never know!". Ummm, yeah I do, and I'm not pregnant.
After 3+ years, my cycle history is quite long. For details on each cycle, please visit my "About Me" page

Trying since fall 2007
All tests show normal (we're "unexplained")

COH+IUI in Nov 08 = BFN
IVF # 1 Feb 09 - BFN
IVF #2 June 2009 - BFP
13 week u/s showed a missed m/c. Baby stopped developing around 8 weeks. Damn.

Moving on to adoption :)
March 22, 2010 - finished PRIDE classes
waiting to begin homestudy sometime in the next two years. That's not a typo - TWO YEARS
Feb 2012 - got a call that they are ready to start our home study...putting off all adoption decisions for at least 6 months because I am 2 weeks from my due date (see below)

Feb 2011 - we've been offered donor embryos! FET in a few months after preliminary tests are done...
FET June 2011:
May 7 - start suprefact and low dose aspirin (on CD21)
May 14 - AF started - super heavy and I'm super cranky. Headaches from the suprefact too
May 21 - starting Estrace and both of us start antibiotics
June 3 - u/s to check lining
June 8 - FET
June 21 - Beta is 564. June 24 Beta is 2286
July 12 - first u/s at 7w1d
Aug 18 - second u/s at 12w4d - everything looks great
Aug 30 - first prenatal appt
Oct 6 - 20w anatomy scan, could find out the sex!
It's a BOY!!
EDD is Feb 26, 2012
beautiful healthy baby boy born March 1, 2012 <3

My friend ButterflyKiss provided this quote from Laura Bush's book and I think it captures how many of us feel:"The English language lacks the words to mourn an absence... for someone who was never there at all, we are wordless to capture that particular emptiness. For those who deeply want children and are denied them, those missing babies hover like silent, ephemeral shadows over their lives. Who can describe the feel of a tiny hand that is never held?"

Yeah, I heard the "fertility monitor" one and the "just relax" one, get this ... from a friend who has struggled with infertility!!

How quickly people forget! I was like, "Yeah, with the male factor AND the blocked fallopian tubes, I don't think that's going to work."

Now ... wearing socks while drunk ... that might do the trick. Maybe we should put on funny hats too.
Me: 41, DH: 44
TTC: since Jan, 2008 (age 34)

DH: Low morphology, low count. Me: Stage 2-3 endometriosis, non-functional fallopian tubes, small fibroids, low AFC, low poor responder ... anything else?

Jun 2008-Sep 2011 in a nutshell: One HSG, one very traumatic office hysteroscopy, one operative laparoscopy, three fresh IVF/ICSI cycles, one chemical, one early miscarriage, two tubal recanalizations, five IUIs (3 with Clomid).

May 2010 - Aug 2011 Attempted adoption application process through the BC MCFD. Aug 2011 Signed up with a private agency. On both waiting lists as of Apr 2012. Proposal through MCFD Jul 2012. Aug 2012 - Finally ... she's home and we're a family! : )

Adoption application #2 started Aug 2013. DD2 placed May 2014, finalized Feb 2015!

I don't know if I should laugh or cry... I've heard them all with the exception of the socks - yikes. Thanks for bringing back this thread!

I wish I had the nerve to send the Aunt Jane u-tube song to some of the clueless people around me. I guess that would make me just as insensitive as they are, so I just hope that someday they stumble on it and feel really, really foolish... still not exactly sensitive of me, but oh well!

#1) Go off all meds and treatments, just relax and it will happen. How I wish!!

#2) Had a freind ask me "are you having sex every other day starting on day 10 of your cycle?". I responded by telling her I have an ultrasound tech stick a wand up my vajayjay every day starting on day 10 of my cycle to tell me EXACTLY WHEN to have sex, and it's still not working, then I asked her if she had any more brilliant ideas? LOL!

For my next IUI I'm going to wear knee socks and a funny hat, stand on my head afterwards and have multiple orgasms, which should ultimately relax me!! I'll let you all know how it turns out!!!

Me (Kerri-Lyn) 41, DH (Steve) 37, TTC since April 2007Unexplained IF (possibly crappy eggs, AMH 10.4 = poor responder) - HSG, SHGx3, Lap, Cycle Monitoring, Recurrent loss bloods, EMB, Karyotyping, DNA Frag - all normal! 7 IUI's, 2 cancelled IVF's, 3 complete IVF's, 1 FET, 2 clinics, 1 early miscarriage, lots of debt, lots of heartache, lots of tears. We rolled the dice and got lucky on our last ditch "close the door" cycle and have a beautiful little girl. April 2014 - Had the crazy notion to try for another. Shocked with a BFP, miscarried @ 8W6D. See my "about me" page for more cycle details.

For me -

Relax !! it will happen.
Go on vacation - it will happen
Adopt - it will happen
Get drunk before you know .......
don't eat/drink diary

And another one

It will happen - when it is least expected.

Hmm, I don't know how to not expect it, as I chart/time and do IVfs and all ..........

i get "you just NEVER KNOW!" from those that KNOW we've had to do IVF.

Um, unless the drs are COMPLETELY OFF BASE... WE DO KNOW -- and there is NO ROOM FOR POSSIBILITY in OUR case. You're right, that's NOT the same as so-and-so and the other so-and-sos you know that got pregnant through IVF and THEN got pregnant on their own (cause according to THOSE stories, it simply happens for EVERYBODY?!?!) arh. And it bugs me the most when the chose to live in their dream world and answer "well, you just NEVER know" as in "it might still" --- it bugs me that THEY need to hold on to that "all is good in the world" when they haven't delt with anything really bad, you know?

We know.

Before we did get pregnant -- we moved from city to country and a few people said "just wait - it's all you needed..." REALLY? WTF?

Or we were told "you just have to rearrange your bedroom furniture - apparently that works for many people" REALLY? what??

Hey... I just had that very conversation with my friend. She went into a long story about her friends who adopted and then got pregnent. ....
Ok, I should adopt....yes, because TTC a great reason to adopt.....Maybe afterwards we could give the adopted child back.

I really wanted to slap her - but I think that would have been rude.

One of the annoying ones I got was from a family doctor that I went to see when I was suspecting I may have pcos. So when I told her I hadn't gotten my period for MONTHS she said "that may be normal for you and it's ok you can still get pregnant..my mother was like that and she had children" OK so I may or may not even be ovulating and if I am it is totally unpredictable and only a few times a year but that's no problem I'll still get pregnant!!!! From a DOCTOR??
Started ttc in fall 04
m/c@7 weeks in April 2005
2006 found out about pcos and male factor
Decided to adopt.....approved and waiting until agency closed in Nov. 2009

I think all the sex advice (or assvice) we get is hilarious. These are recent comments I've received:

1. A friend of mine told me to get sloppy drunk. Perhaps it worked for her. She started TTC about 7 months after me and gave birth to an adorable girl in August 2010.
2. Have sex every day in your cycle.
3. Have sex every other day.
4. Do it doggy style and make sure you O.

Seriously? How inappropriate is this conversation?

It's not the comments sometimes, but who gives them.

From the pharmasist handing me clomid perscription:
"we get so worked up about these things, RELAX... it will happen"
I was speachless.
What I should have said was:
Yes lady...thanks... Wow. What great advice I'll give that a try.... Here, have the clomid back. I don't think I will need it now that you have solved my fertility problem.

 That would be hilarious to see the look on the pharmacist's face. I fricken HATE that comment. "You're trying too hard"... what the hell do they picture? Us BD'ing scrunching our faces and squeezing our eyes shut grunting???

I love this thread!!
Again we've gotten the "RELAX" assvice too many times to count.
And "Just adopt - you know sooo many people got pregnant after they adopted!" -----I'm sure it has happened a couple of times in the history of infertility and the same story has been circulated throughout the world for an eternity afterwards. Everybody seems to know "that couple" who got pg after adopting. Ohh how I wish it were that simple!!

I'd forgotten about that one. Like adopting is any easier. We have people in our community who have been on the waitlist for adoption for 7 years and still haven't had the homestudy!
Me 43 DH 45. 2ww post day 3 transfer

Being someone who has experienced IF for 4 years, I've heard all of these. The funny thing was I actually got a surprise unassisted BFP and when I went into the clinic for my 7 week u/s, one of the nurses who I really like actually said to me " See what happens when you relax". Uhm - I actually haven't been that relaxed but whatever. I think anyone could say anything insensitive to me right now and I would still be grinning like loon.
I guess for me it hasn't been so much what people have said, it is more when they have said it and who the advice is coming from. If it is right after a failed cycle anything could have set me off and if I felt the person was being a real "know-it-all" when they had no experience with IF, I would just be hopping mad. I guess what I try to think is that other people have their shit to deal with other than IF and that I've likely unknowly been insensitive to whatever they are dealing with.

We've received the "just relax" comment.

However, it was funny when I was picking up my birth control to prepare for ivf and my pregvit prescription at the pharmacy at the same time. The pharmacist was baffled as to why i needed birth control and pregvit. LOL!!! The expression on her face...priceless.

"Just adopt. There are THOUSANDS of babies who need parents."

Stop IVF because it is too stressful.

"Sponsor a mass (donate to the church) regularly"  - With all due respect, I can see how this is considered a good practice for some christians but I kind of need to save my money for IVF and meds

"Maybe you're not praying enough...Offer your sacrifices [to God]... and accept whatever you're given"

"Travel and see the world instead of spending your time on money on something that will not work"

"Just relax and you'll be pregnant before you know it"

Who stole ambushed my stork?  So many failed cycles with nothing to show but bills, receipts, and empty bottles of medications/herbs/supplements. See my profile for details...

UPDATE: I'm counting the days and hours waiting for this miracle to unfold. Christina Perri's A Thousand Years pretty much sums up my experience.

It was long, awful & hard. We got very lucky and didn't run out of both emotional and financial resources. We saw some of the most beautiful of people in our lowest moments. Baby Girl arrived Apr 10/2018
