August 24, 2014 (Egg Retrieval Day)Got up at 6am and took my shower like the instructions said, as did my husband, and headed over to the clinic. When I arrived, I was taken to the recovery room to change into a gown, blue cap and slippers that the doctors wear. My husband had to put on the famous blue suit with the cap and booties. I sat in the chair and had an IV put in for fluids and a pill to take under my tongue to counter act any infection that might try and happen. Then after a while I was brought into the procedure room put on the table and given a sedative in my IV which doesn't knock me out completely, but makes you VERY drowsy. Because my bladder never empties fully they had to out in a catheter, and then proceeded with the egg retrieval. They apparently were using what looked like a two foot long needle according to my husband, and really he was not too far off, it is pretty long, but I didn't really feel anything, at least not anything that I can remember. It took all of about 15-20 minutes to do.
Next all I remember is the doctor coming up to me and rubbing my head, and I will never forget these words, he said "We extracted all the follicles but were only able to get 4 eggs, I'm so sorry" I cried, and am still crying while writing this. It was devastating, especially if you think about the fact that even women who have lets say, 18 eggs retrieved may only have 8-10 good eggs out of the bunch. So for me this was devastating, because what if none of my eggs fertilized, then that was it, I was done. Nothing to freeze which would mean that I would have to pay the $13,000 all over again.
That wait time until 11am the next day will be torture. I had to call the lab just after 11am on the 25th to see if the ICSI (injecting sperm into egg) worked or not and how many worked if any.
